THE MODOC COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT has an opening for an Engineering Technician I or II. A technician is responsible for engineering-related activities including drafting, surveying and traffic data collection, public works inspection, and counter support. Engineering Technician I is the entry level position for technicians. Tech I performs computer aided and manual drafting tasks to maintain County base and zoning maps; reviews specifications and bid documents for County projects; makes computations and enters data into an automated system that produces reports, drawings and statistical reports; performs field surveys, then creates field notes and computations; processes and maintains County encroachment permits; reviews plans for conformity with codes and regulations; prepares bid abstracts, correspondence and reports; drafts legal descriptions and other written materials for annexations and related activities; tests materials by separating, sieving, weighing and performing other tests. The Technician I must have knowledge of engineering mathematics; engineering drafting; record keeping; and familiarity with basic engineering, survey and public works terminology. The Engineering Technician I is required to have the equivalent of a high school diploma including major coursework in mathematics through trigonometry, plus one year of experience in engineering, drafting, construction, survey or related technical support field. This position also requires possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. Engineering Technician II is the experienced level position. In addition to Tech I qualifications above, the Tech II will have knowledge in principals and practices of computer drafting, engineering database management, plan review and field inspection. They will also have skills in performing independent research; using relevant office and field tools; and understanding applicable laws, codes and regulations. The Tech II must have two years of experience providing technical support to an engineering function. Some college course work in appropriate technical subject is desirable. THE MODOC COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT has one Engineering opening at either the Assistant or Associate level. Engineering work includes conducting cost feasibility and design studies related to roads, bridges and culverts; developing and administering professional service and construction contracts; and reviewing plans and inspecting projects. Job and salary level will be determined by applicant experience. Both positions require researching, analyzing and summarizing engineering data using computer applications; interpreting maps, plans/specs, graphs and statistical data; making complex engineering calculations quickly and accurately; and preparing technical documents, reports and correspondence. Additional duties include record keeping, and interacting with the public via written correspondence, phone and in-person. Both positions require knowledge of engineering objectives, principles, procedures, standards, practices and information sources. Additionally, knowledge of materials analysis/testing, soils analysis, statistical analysis and mathematical concepts related to the engineering process is essential. Both positions require the equivalent of graduation from a 4-year college/university with major course work relevant to engineering. Requirements for the Associate in addition to those for the Assistant are knowledge of facility design and construction; applicable laws, codes and regulations; and basic supervisory principles.
