Let's discuss community hunger

Share your thoughts and ideas on accessing healthy food resources for low-income individuals, seniors and families during a Regional Listening Session at City Hall, 200 W. North St., Alturas on Thursday, May 8 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you care about Hunger issues in your community, please plan to attend.

SV Hospital lobby open house

The joint open house to show off the new lobby at Surprise Valley Hospital is tonight, May 8, between 5:00 and 7:00.  Everyone is welcome. Refreshments under the covered area in front of the Hospital.

This event is hosted by both the Surprise Valley Chamber and the Hospital Auxiliary.

Memorial poppies available

Clifford Harter American Legion Auxiliary #163 will be distributing the Memorial Poppy on Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9 at the Alturas Post Office and Four Corner Market.
The Memorial Poppy is made by hospitalized veterans in Auxiliary sponsored shops. Some of the funds donated for each poppy helps supplement the physical and psychological therapy needs of the hospitalized veterans.

Wildfire safe at home? Check tonight

The Modoc Fire Safe Council offers program to help the senior citizens or disabled residents of Modoc County to increase the survivability of their homes from wildfire. Childbirth classes begin

Childbirth Education classes continue tonight through May 29 at the Family Development Center, 901 N.E. "A" Street, Alturas. Classes will run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each Thursday. The series is provided by the Modoc County Public Health Dept., Early Head Start and the Welcome Baby Program. Enjoy Senior meals in S.V.

Senior meals are served every Tuesday and Thursday at noon at the Senior Center, Cedarville. The cost is $2.50 per plate. Anyone 55 and above may attend. They may also bring a guest. The meals are provided by the Surprise Valley Hospital and are "homemade and delicious."

Take weight off with help

Take the weight off and keep it off with help from TOPS #CA 1954. The group meets each Thursday at the Modoc Senior Center, 906 West Fourth St., Alturas from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. weigh-ins from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Everyone welcome. Emblem Spring luncheon at Lodge

Emblem Club #524 will host their annual Spring Luncheon for the public on Friday, May 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join the lunch at the Alturas Elks Lodge or make arrangements at time of advance ticket purchase to have lunch delivered. Tickets are $6 at the door, or $7 for delivered meal. Pre-sale tickets are available by calling Bonnie at 233-1239. The lunch offers an array of sandwiches, desserts and salads.

Spring Rummage Sale

St. Michael's Great Spring Rummage Sale will be open to the public on Friday, May 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 310 North Street, Alturas. Come for the bargains. Sandwiches, cake, coffee and soft drinks will be available at the church hall, 310 North Street, Alturas.

Awana Clubs host Book Fair

Faith Baptist Church Awana Club will host a Book Fair on Friday, May 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church, corner of West and Carlos streets. A varied assortment of books and Bibles for all ages. Proceeds will help purchase a Grand Prix Race Track timer and to help Clubbers go to West Coast Honor Camp. Awana is a Children's and Youth ministry.

Unique display opens at Art Center

The Art Center gallery is featuring the pottery and large tile wall hangings of artist Debbie Anderson this month of May. Her large tile wall hangings are painted with nature themes. Stop by the nonprofit Art Center, 317 S. Main Street, Alturas, Tuesday through Saturday.

Help Stamp Out Hunger

Letter carriers annual Food Drive on Saturday, May 10 will welcome a box, can or bag of non-perishable food next to their mailbox before their letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday, May 10. The carrier will do the rest. The food is taken back to a postal station, sorted and then delivered to the area food bank and pantry. There it is available for needy families.

Silhouette shoot

Alturas Rifle and Pistol Club will hold their monthly 22 silhouette shoot at the club range on Centerville Road on Saturday, May 10. The event will start 9 a.m. For information call Jerry at 233-4359.

Legion to host District meeting

American Legion District Three meeting will be held Saturday, May 10 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Alturas. Coffee and donuts available from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. District Three meeting to start at 10 a.m. The Post Auxiliary will serve a lunch following the meeting. The Post needs as many members as possible to attend the District Three meeting.

Veterans host Bingo nights

Anyone 18 or older is welcome to join in playing Bingo games on Saturday night, May 10. Games start at 6:30 p.m. at the Veterans' Memorial Hall, So. Main St., Alturas. Veterans groups in Alturas host the weekly games and cash prizes.

Wool Gathering, potluck

Mother's Day Breakfast

Canby Women's Auxiliary will host a Mother's Day Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 11 at the Canby Fire Hall. Carnations will be given to mothers. Pancakes, choice of ham or sausage and eggs will be served for $6.50 for ages 12 and up; $4 for children ages 4 to 11 and under age four, free. Everyone invited.

Mothers are special in D.C.

A Mother's Day Breakfast, sponsored by the Davis Creek Volunteer Fire Department, will be served on May 11, (Mother's Day) from 8 a.m. to 12 at the Grange Hall in Davis Creek.  All proceeds will benefit the Davis Creek 4-H.  For further information, please contact John Zimmerman at 233-1929.

CCW class offered

A class for new and renewing concealed carry weapons permit (CCW) holders will be offered Sunday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Alturas Rifle and Pistol Range.

Class size is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Each participant needs to furnish a minimum of 100 rounds of ammunition for the required range shooting time. The cost is $100 for the full day of instruction. To reserve a space call and leave a message for Kirk at (530) 279-2395. He will return phone calls.

California Hunter Education classes will be offered May 12, 13 and 14 at Alturas Elks Lodge, 619 North Main St., at 6 p.m. each night. Students must be present all three nights. Pick up a student handbook in advance at Belligerent Duck or Sports Hut. Bring the handbook, pencil and paper to class. Study is highly recommended.

The initial meeting to start an amateur "HAM" Radio Operator Club will be held Thursday, May 15, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at 411 So. Main St., Alturas. The group will follow the American Radio Relay League's program to get a license. Chick Keeney and Tyler Froeming will be lead instructors. Modoc County Children's Fair will open Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Modoc High School campus. This year's theme "Where the West is Fun." Opening ceremonies with a "Western Crazy Hat Parade" will run from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. All demonstrations, booths, games and entertainment will open immediately following the ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free.

Ice Cream, auction and dance

Providence 4-H Club is planning their third annual Ice Cream Social, Auction and Dance for May 17 at the Adin Community Hall at 5 p.m. Admission is $2 for all you can eat ice cream. Blood Drive in S.V.

Surprise Valley VFW Auxiliary 7888 will welcome new and returning donors to a Surprise Valley Community Blood Drive on Monday, May 19 open 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Modoc County Fairgrounds All Seasons Restaurant in Cedarville. The Auxiliary will sponsor refreshments.

Library closes for two days

Modoc County Library in Alturas will be closed on May 19 and 20, Monday and Tuesday for staff training. The Library will reopen at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21. The Library is also open on Thursdays, noon to 8 p.m.

Fort Bidwell barbecue

Fort Bidwell Fire Department and Civic Club will present the annual Fort Bidwell Memorial Day Steak Barbecue Sunday, May 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Fort Bidwell. Tickets at the door, $12 adults; children six to 12, $6 Five and younger, free hamburger with a paying adult.
