Crazy Quilters gather

Crazy Quilters will gather at the home of Sharon Carey at 403 N. East D Street, Alturas at 7 p.m., February 19. Crazy Quilters is an informal group with no dues or requirements, other than an interest in quilting. One need not be an expert quilter. Anyone new to quilting or with an interest in the art form is welcome and encouraged to attend. If further information is necessary, please call 233-3293.

Vitality meeting

The time and date of the monthly Economic Vitality meetings has changed to the third Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. The next meeting will be today, Thursday, February 19 at 3 p.m. at the Modoc Employment Center Alliance for Workforce Development, Inc. office on Main Street, Alturas. Public welcome.

Join Book Discussion group

On February 19 Modoc County Library's Third Thursday Book Discussion Group will meet at the Alturas Library. Joanna Chrysler will facilitate the discussion of Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. Copies of the novel are available for checkout at the library. You are invited to join this lively group at the Modoc County Library, 212 W. 3rd St., Alturas. Celebrate Recovery

Are you struggling with an addiction that seems overwhelming? There is hope for you in this Biblically-based program called Celebrate Recovery. It meets each Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Alturas Baptist Church, located at 500 West Fourth Street. Attendance is free and open to all, however there may be a nominal cost for curriculum materials. Ed Allen is the leader of this ministry, and he would be happy to welcome you to this informative and inspirational quest for freedom in Christ. Women's Basketball night

Women's basketball games are offered Thursday nights at the Modoc Middle School, West Fourth St., Alturas. Play runs from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Thursday. There is no cost to play and no registration required. Girls are invited too. Call Erin Bevil for more information at 530-233-6644.

Lighten your load

Take the weight off and keep it off with help from TOPS #CA 1954. The group meets each Thursday at the Modoc Senior Center, 906 West Fourth St., Alturas from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; weigh-ins from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Everyone welcome. Cedarville ‘Jam' Friday

Enjoy a variety of music at the Cedarville Jam on Friday night, Feb. 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Senior Center in Cedarville. This week's theme will be historical songs. Bring a song, an instrument and/or voice or come to enjoy the music. The group meets the first and third Fridays of the month.

Place bids at art auction

The Art Center is currently holding a silent auction with tickets for door prizes for bidding on auction items through Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stop by to place a bid on the works of local and regional artists and craftspeople in pottery, jewelry, prints, paintings, drawings and more. Art Center volunteers are not eligible for door prizes. The winner will choose from a lot of three paintings.

Rehearsals for Easter musical

Rehearsals are beginning for the Easter Musical, entitled "Come to Calvary," which will be presented Good Friday, April 10, 7:00 p.m. at Alturas Baptist Church.

Choir rehearsals will take place each Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the church, located at 500 West Fourth Street. All interested in participating are invited.  To facilitate learning the music, printed music and listening CD will be furnished.  Narrators and orchestral participants are also needed.  Orchestra rehearsals will be announced soon.  For further information, please call the church at 233-3725.

Fear of Public Speaking? Problem Solved!

Toastmasters is a speaking and leadership club that helps with speech delivery, effectiveness, meeting management, and also fear and nervousness in public speaking.  Be the one to stand up at a wedding, funeral, or town meeting and be able to speak without fear.  You have something to say. Guests are encouraged; there is absolutely no pressure.  Just come and watch for as long as you want. The group meets Friday mornings at 7:45 a.m. at Modoc Public Health 441 N. Adin hosts benefit dinner

A benefit dinner for the Dick Hiatt family of Adin, will be an all-you-can eat Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Adin Community Hall. Tickets will be available at the door for $7 per person. In addition, donations will also be welcomed. Public welcome.

SEALS host annual dinner

SEALS After school program will present their third annual barbecued tri-tip dinner Saturday, Feb. 21 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Senior Center in Cedadrville. Presale tickets, $10 at Page's Market and from After school students. Tickets at the door, $12. Fund will be used for the group's end of the year trip. Come for tri-tip, salad, rolls, beans, baked potato, dessert and drinks.

Hebrew roots seminar in Canby

Alturas Rifle and Pistol Club will hold their monthly black powder silhouette shoot at the club range on Centerville Rd., Alturas on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. at Centerville Rd., Alturas. Public welcome. "See how your forefathers got the evening meal," say organizers.

Share your heart

High Plateau Humane Society will feature at least three dogs and two cats needing good homes this Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its weekly Adopt-a-Pet day at Second Chance Thrift Store, 110 E. First Street, Alturas. Tickets for the fourth annual Taste of Alturas dinner are also available there for $20, adults; $10 per child.

Pancake Supper at St. Michael's

The annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will be offered to the public on Tuesday, February 24 serving from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 310 North St., Alturas. Tickets will be available at the door, $5 for adults; $2 for kids 12 and under. All-you-can-eat pancakes, ham and eggs. Everyone welcome.

Men's Fellowship

Men's Bible Study Fellowship welcomes those interested to join them at 7 a.m. Tuesdays at the Bullock's Donuts in Alturas. Pastor Mel Chasteen of Alturas Baptist Church guides the discussions. All are welcome.

Tuesday night Bingo games hosted by Veterans' Auxiliaries will open at 6:30 p.m. February 24 Veterans' Memorial Hall, So. Main Street. Anyone 18 and older is welcome to play.

Canby CSD public meeting

The Canby Community Services District will meet Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Canby Fire Hall. This meeting is an important one and all residents of the community are encouraged to attend. We will be presenting goals and moving forward with applications on a water project for the Canby Community Services District. Please attend, your questions and opinions are important.

Sales aid Food Bank

Every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the side entrance to the TEACH building at 112 E. Second St., Alturas, the Clothing Closet sale is ongoing. The public is welcome to stop by to pick up a bag for one dollar; no limit to the number of bags. Proceeds benefit the Modoc Emergency Food Bank. The sale will continue until future notice.

Blood Drive in Valley

The Blood Drive in Surprise Valley will be held Thursday, Feb. 26 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the All Season's Restaurant, Modoc Fairgrounds. T-shirts will be given to donors. "Please support your local hospital by donating blood." VFW 7888 Auxiliary will be sponsoring the drive and refreshments. Blood Centers of the Pacific ask that you bring a photo ID and donor card. Free cholesterol testing with every donation.

The Modoc Senior Center will be hosting a 98th birthday party for Al Crudele on Friday, Feb. 27. Come join in lunch and bring Al a birthday card. Please call 233-4438 to make a lunch reservation in advance.

Comedy tour at Niles

A benefit for the A.C.T. Niles Theater will feature the Pow Wow Comedy Tour on Feb. 27 with two shows; family show at 6 p.m.; Adult show at 8:30 p.m. Tickets at the door, $10 for adults; $5 for seniors, children 12 and under. The event is being sponsored by Strong Family Health Center ,RISE and Cedarville Rancheria.

Free breakfast for Seniors

Lookout Grange #415 will serve a free breakfast for senior citizens over 60 on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Lookout Fire Hall, Lookout. For anyone under 60 years, the cost is $3.50 for breakfast.

Davis Creek hosts Crab Feed

Davis Creek Women's Fire Auxiliary will hold a Crab Feed on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Davis Creek Grange Hall. Pre sale tickets, $25 available from Bev at 530-233-3708. No tickets will be available at the door.

‘Helping Hands' to meet

"Alturas Helping Hands" February meeting and potluck will be held Saturday, February 28 at 3 p.m. at the Christian Life Assembly Church, corner of West Third and B St., Alturas. Benefit dinner, auction

The Tim Copp (of Adin) Family Benefit dinner and auctions on March 7, start at 5 p.m. at the Bieber Memorial Hall. Auction starts at 5:30 p.m. Both live and silent auctions, a cake auction and 75/25 raffle will be held. Lasagna dinner tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for kids (ages six and under).

MREA Board meeting

A special meeting of the Board of Directors of Modoc Recreational Estates Association will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 7 at Sons of the Pioneers Park on Steelhead Lane. Agenda items include road maintenance, payment of association outstanding bills, and insurance coverage.  A full agenda for the meeting to be posted at the Sons of the Pioneers Park and at the US Post Office, Alturas.

Hoop Wars deadline

The 12th annual Basketball Tournament sponsored by Hoop Wars Committee will be held March 6,7,8 in Surprise Valley High School Gym, Cedarville. Team reservations are required by Feb. 19 with $100 deposit. For more information please call Hanna Goodwin at 530-640-1300. Play will be limited to 10 men's teams and six women's teams, 10-player limit per team.
