IMPORTANT NEWS

DFG to discuss City deer herd

In mid September the Alturas City Council heard from a few members of the public concerning the deer problem in Alturas.
With that in mind, the Council has invited representatives from the California Fish and Wildlife Department, including local warden Brian Gallaher to the Oct. 21 meeting.
The meeting is at Alturas City Hall, 200 W. North St. beginning at 2 p.m.
The Council will be soliciting the CDFW ideas and suggestions, if any, on how to control the deer herds within the City limits.
Several people have expressed their frustration with the deer and the City Council was asked in September to address the issue.
One Alturas resident told the Council they first had to identify the deer problem and realize it is a problem. She said most of the deer now residing in the City limits have been born in the city and don’t intend to leave.
There was no ready solution at hand last month, but the Council felt there needed to be public involvement and discussion. In addition, while many people are fed up with the deer destroying their landscaping, others don’t seem to mind.
In addition to the landscape issue, the deer are also causing some safety concerns on City Streets. Cars have hit several over the past couple of years and they have no trouble prancing down the street in the traffic lanes. Actually, on Monday a small herd of 10 deer crossed the intersection of Fifth and Main Street, almost obeying the law by using the crosswalks. Traffic stopped and waited for them to cross the street.
