Modoc Middle School graduates

Modoc Middle School will hold graduation ceremonies at 7 p.m. tonight, June 8 at Griswold Gym, Modoc High.

TOPS encourages weight loss

TOPS #CA1954 hosts meetings each Thursday at the Modoc Senior Center, 906 West Fourth ST., Alturas from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Weigh-ins from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Everyone welcome. TOPS stands for Taking Off Pounds Sensibly and has proven successful results for many local residents. For further information please call 233-4069.

Square dancers plan outing

Join square dancing classes tonight, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Veterans' Hall, So. Main St., Alturas. Caller/instructor John Burke will review calls that are requested to be reviewed and dance for fun.
Saturday night, June 10, Tall Town Travelers in Lakeview will sponsor a mainstream level dance. A group from Modoc, may carpool at 4 p.m. to have dinner in Lakeview, before the dance begins at 7 p.m. at the Veterans' Hall across from the movie theater. Christian Life Assembly offers youth groups which meet every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 225 West B Street, Alturas. Call Michelle at 233-2804 for more information or questions about the different age groups available.

Playgroup meets at Cedarville Park

Surprise Valley Playgroup will gather every Friday at the Cedarville Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pack a picnic lunch, bring the kids and join the group. For more information contact Cindy Linker, 233-6090.

DAV meets Friday morning

The D.A.V., Modoc Chapter 113 meeting for June 10, has been changed to Friday, June 9 at 11 a.m. at Veterans' Hall.

"No Quorum, no officers, no chapter," reminds Arlie Brown, who asks all members to attend.

Speaker informs Toastmasters

Mark Steffek of Alturas will present a five to seven minute demonstration speech on "successful airplane landing techniques," as part of the Speaking to Inform manual at the Toastmasters International meeting on Friday, June 9 at 7:45 a.m. at the Mental Health Department (old forest service building on Main Street, Alturas).

Graduation ceremonies set

Modoc High School will hold commencement exercises on Friday, June 9 at 8 p.m. outdoors on Carver Field at the Modoc High School. Sarah Currer will speak as Valedictorian, with Grant Hall as Salutatorian. Project Graduation parent committee will host the graduation party in the MHS Griswold Gym from 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Surprise Valley High School commencement will be held Friday, June 9 at 8 p.m. Valedictorian: Wayne Cockrell. Salutatorian: Sarah Teuscher.

Saturday, June 10th

Adopt-a-Pet and more Saturday

High Plateau Humane Society will sponsor one of its popular Adopt-A-Pet days this Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot next to Faye's Jewelry Store, which is having a close-out sale. Here is a chance to provide a home for a kitten, cat, or rescued dog, which has been left homeless through no fault of its own.

Gun Club hosts shoot

The Alturas Rifle and Pistol Club will hold their monthly 22- silhouette shoot at the club range on Centerville Road on Saturday, June 10. The shoot will begin at 9 a.m. For more information call Jerry at 233-4359.

Veterans host Bingo

Games will resume Saturday, June 10 for anyone 18 and older to join Saturday night Bingo games hosted by the veterans' organizations. Games will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Veterans' Memorial Hall, So. Main St., Alturas.

AmVets meeting rescheduled

AmVets Post 2003 which had planned to meet Saturday, June 10, has been rescheduled to Saturday, July 8 at 10 a.m. at Veterans' Hall, Alturas.

Sunday, June 11th

Cattlemen host Field Day

Modoc County Cattlemen's Association Spring Field Day will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 11 from the Modoc Fairgrounds in Cedarville. A historic ranch tour and, honoring of two local cattlemen for statewide honors and lunch will be included.

Video airs Friday surrounding Code

The video "Discussing The DaVinci Code," by Lee Strobel and Gary Poole, will be shown at Alturas Baptist Church, 500 West Fourth St., Alturas, this Sunday, June 11 at 6 p.m. Public cordially invited.

Paintball games

The Modoc Mudslingers and friends will be gathering at the County Road 261 site, SW of Alturas at 3 p.m. until about 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 11 for paintball games. Get on the net and go to modocmudslingers.com for directions and view additional information.

Paintballs, Co2 and high pressure air, plus other supplies, are available at the site for a nominal fee. All newcomers are welcome. USDA Commodities available

USDA Commodities will be distributed at the Modoc Senior Citizens Center, 906 West Fourth St., Alturas on Monday, June 12 from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. or until supplies run out. Proof of income is required for the government surplus food items.

Summer Reading Program opens

Children or teens are encouraged to read and enjoy the adventures found in reading, during the Modoc County Library's fun summer program. Sign ups for the "Summer Reader Gang" at the Alturas library begin on Monday, June 12th. Branch libraries will also be offering programs with varying schedules.

'Fun in the Sun' starts for kids

An activity based recreation program for first through fifth graders will start at 2:30 p.m. each day after summer school is dismissed. The program will begin Monday, June 12 and end July 7. There is no charge for the activities. Staff will be with the children until 5:30 p.m. each weekday. Sponsored by Alturas After School Program and Modoc Parks and Recreation District, activities will be supervised by Heather Tufts and her After-School staff and volunteers. Buddy Poppies for Flag Day

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary will be offering the red Buddy Poppies on June 14, Flag Day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alturas Post Office, 4Corners and Holiday Markets in Alturas.

The VFW was the first veterans' organization to adopt the poppy and develop a national distribution campaign in February 1924, and has raised millions of dollars over a 75-year period in support of veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents. The poppies are assembled by disabled, needy and aging veterans in VA Hospitals and domiciliaries across the country and are distributed by VFW Posts and their Ladies Auxiliaries.

Christian Women host program

Christian Women's Club invites all interested to their monthly luncheon program, this month on Wednesday, June 14 featuring guest speaker Patty Griffin of Gaston, OR. Be a part of Humane Society

High Plateau Humane Society will hold an orientation meeting for volunteers at noon on Thursday, June 15 at the Corner Deli in Alturas. Even if you do not want to foster cats and dogs, HPHS has other positions where volunteers can be most helpful.

Crazy Quilters plan outing

Ready for Jr. Livestock Show

Modoc County Junior Livestock Show will take place on Friday, June 16 at the John Cummings Memorial Livestock Grounds in Alturas. The Alturas, Big Valley and Surprise Valley FFA Chapters will be serving tri-tip, beans, rolls and salad on Friday, June 16 at 4 p.m. on the grounds. Tickets will be available for purchase at the barbecue.

Junior Fishing Derby near Adin

The 11th Annual Junior Fishing Derby will be held June 17, one mile west of Adin at Bassett Road. The Pit River Rod and Gun Club and Ash Creek Wildlife Area will sponsor the event and prizes. Applications are available at Ash Creek Wildlife area, Big Valley Market and Adin Supply. Kids up to age 15 are welcome to enter. Registration will be held from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. June 17. Reunion for Modoc High classes '71-'76

Come celebrate on Saturday, June 17 and 18 at the Likely Links and RV Place starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the Reunion of Modoc High Classes from 1971 through 1976 combined. It will be a 50th birthday party for Modoc High grads and a reunion offering cake and wine, a barbecue, dancing in Likely Saturday night and lots of visiting. The event opens Saturday morning with a golf tournament from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by plenty of opportunity to visit and enjoy the day and continues on Sunday.

Steam and Iron Show

Shepherd's Seventh Annual Old Iron Show with old equipment, some powered by steam, will be held in Lookout on Saturday, June 17. A parade and displays of old tractors and equipment is planned. A working sawmill and water wheel will also be featured. Bring your old tractors, equipment and parts for the show. Follow the signs from Lookout. For more information call 530-294-5141.

Father's Day fun

Goose Lake Community Association will host a Father's Day Celebration offering fun for dads and families on Sunday, June 18 in New Pine Creek. A lunch of smoked brisket, ranch beans and coleslaw, dessert and beverage for $13 per person or $6.50 for youths age 12 and under. Lunch served from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the outdoor/barbecue area next to New Pine Creek Store.

Prize drawing for a 2219 Ruger rifle and gun cabinet at 3:30 p.m. Winner need not be present to win. Purchase advance ticket at New Pine Creek Store or call Anita at 946-4148. The Association is hosting this fund-raiser to help build a community center in New Pine Creek, at the corner of State Line Road and Highway 395.

Farmer's Market opens

A Farmers' Market will open at 3 p.m. to the public and growers on Friday, June 23 on the Surprise Valley Hospital lawn. Bring freshly- picked vegetables, fruits and food items to sell. Teen Health Fair

The Lake County Crisis Center and Lake Health District will co-sponsor at Teen Health Faire free on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Memorial Hall, Lakeview, OR.

All teens are invited to this special event held in conjunction with Dr. Daly Days. Free samples, free goodies and free hygiene gift bags, along with education about health: physical, emotional and spiritual.

June Jamboree offers fun

The second annual June Jamboree, a Friends of the Modoc County Library fundraiser for the Library Improvement Fund, on Saturday, June 24, will be held at Stephen and Cheryl Baker's 10-acre Railway Garden near Alturas, includes train rides on the Argo Gold Mine Train, lively musical entertainment, barbecue, book sale, self-guided garden tours, gold panning demonstrations and more. Walkabout offered

Enjoy a relaxing Walkabout, a self-guided tour of Lakeview's historic homes, buildings and wildflower trail on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..
